Safety Planning

What Is a Safety Plan?

A safety plan is a personalized, practical plan or set of actions to lower your risk of being hurt while experiencing abuse, preparing to leave an abusive situation, or after you leave. It includes information specific to you and your life that will help increase your safety at home, work, and other places that you go daily.

Tips to Improve Your Safety

  • Memorize all important telephone numbers.
  • Keep money with you at all times.
  • Think of a safe place to go in case there is an argument. Try to avoid rooms without an exit or rooms with weapons.
  • Establish a code word or sign so that family, friends or coworkers know when to call for help.
  • Keep a copy of important documents such as social security cards, birth certificates, etc…
  • If you have to meet your abusive former partner, do it in a public place.
  • Keep extra clothing stored in a backpack in a safe place.
  • Think about and make a list of safe people to contact.
